Our best morning meeting activity has also been by far the most controversial. The lip sync battle was entertaining, to say the least. Each grade was instructed to select at least 5 of their classmates to compete in the lip sync battle. With no clear rules or guidelines, the students had all of the creative liberty.
The juniors pulled out all the stops with their “Pitch Perfect” performances and were the clear winners. However, I think the sophomores could’ve easily given the juniors a run for their money if they hadn’t chosen inappropriate songs and had more time to prepare. The freshman performed more of a dance routine with the Deadpool dance to “Bye Bye Bye,” but I loved the effort.
Now the seniors… It was a promising first performance with an impeccable mashup of “Before He Cheats” and “When I Was Your Man” created by Eliza Wysong. However, the performance was not as well rehearsed as the junior boys’ and it was clear that the seniors were going to need to step it up if they wanted to beat the juniors in the finals.
Originally, the seniors seemed eager to win with ideas being thrown out left and right on how to beat the juniors. However, the team seemed to disagree on nearly everything and they ultimately decided at the last minute to forfeit. The rest of the senior class was furious. I think everyone was excited to see the battle between the juniors and seniors as tensions have been high all year with the fight for couches in the commons. But, of course, the senior team lacked the school spirit.
We recently found out about the seniors’ punishment: no commons for a week and the juniors’ lip sync team gets to park in the senior lot. Now, the already enraged senior class grew angrier at the students who forfeit. The divide was real. However, I think this experience and punishment will light a fire amongst the senior class to not only have more spirit, but also to never let another grade beat us.
