As of November 4th, 2025, Zohran Mamdani is the mayor-elect of New York City. He will be the first Muslim mayor of the city and won the election with 50.4% of the votes. Mamdani is 34 years old and was born in Kampala, Uganda. Despite President Trump’s unproven accusations that Mamdani is a communist and terrorist, as well as Trump’s threats to pull federal funds from the city if Mamdani were elected, the mayor-elect was one of many Democratic victories this election day.
Important parts of Mamdani’s campaign include promises of rent freezes, more affordable housing, and/or implementing better ways to help those without homes move into housing that has already been built. Another important part of his campaign was making public transportation, such as buses, completely free. New York City is an expensive place to live, and he wants to focus on the housing crisis, assisting new families, and, according to his website, “Trump-proof” the city. Whether or not these goals will come to fruition, only time will tell; however, Mamdani at least has a plan for how to fund all of these endeavors. He plans to raise the taxes on major corporations and the 1% of extremely wealthy people to the same rate as New York’s neighbor. New Jersey (11.5%).
Already, representatives of the GOP are trying to find ways to attack Mamdani. The President himself said that Mamdani “happens to be a communist,” an assertion that could only have been reasonably come to by misinterpreting one of the mayor-elect’s speeches about poverty. Mamdani’s promises of housing aid were a massive pull for the younger generation of voters, that were a main reason that he won this election. Mamdani looks as though he has New York City on the brink of a positive new era.
